02 A Brief History
In the 1300s, an inch was legally defined in England as the length of **three grains of barley**, dry and round, placed end to end. It was quite a "grainy" system until 1959.
The Centimeter was born during the French Revolution as part of the metric systemโa decimal system intended to be universal and based on the dimensions of the Earth. In 1959, the International Yard and Pound agreement finally wedded the two systems by defining 1 inch as exactly 2.54 cm.

One inch is much larger. In fact, 1 inch is more than double the size of 1 centimeter ($2.54$ times larger to be exact).
Why hasn't the US switched?
Metrication in the US is a "soft" process. While many products use metric, the cost of changing all infrastructure (road signs, machine tools) is estimated in the billions.
