Fraction on the Number Line

We have learnt to show whole numbers like 0,1,2... on a number line.

We can also show fractions on a number line.

Since we have to show 13 , we divide the gap between 0 and 1 into equal parts and show 1 part as 13 (shown above).

13 is also given as . This happens to be the decimal form of 13.

Suppose we want to show 14 on a number line. Into how many equal parts should the length between 0 and 1 be divided?

We divide the length between 0 and 1 into equal parts and show each part as 14.

Can we show 23 on a number line? 23 means 2 parts out of 3 parts. Similarly, how would you show 03 and 33 on this number line? 03 is the point zero whereas since 33 is 1 whole, it can be shown by the point.

So if we have to show 37 on a number line, then, into how many equal parts should the length between 0 and 1 be divided?

If P shows 37 then how many equal divisions lie between 0 and P?
