The Dockland Office Building in Hamburg, Germany has a “silhouette that gives the distinct impression of a ship.”

Most office buildings however, like the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, have a rectangular facade.

Let’s assume the side we see in this picture is only made of glass. The amount of glass used on this side is .

Likewise, let’s also assume the side we see in the Dockland Office Building is also only made of glass. Predict how much glass is used on this side of the building: TODO .

To check our estimate, imagine the Dockland Office Building was actually three separate buildings on barges or cranes that could be moved around to create different possible arrangements. Some students found an estimate of the amount of glass by multiplying the measurements in the original picture:

So, these students did x132 which equals 9,240 . This estimate is over away from the actual answer! This is about 2.5 times more than the actual area! So, multiplying these measurements come close to the area of this shape. In this chapter, we’ll work towards developing a formula to find the area of this kind of shape.

Great work! We’ve established one of the most fundamental ideas of area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes - When moving around parts of a shape, as long as no parts and all parts of the shape are , the total stays the same even as the perimeter .

In fact, this is such an important idea, it is going to stay with us for the rest of this chapter.

When moving around parts of a shape, as long as no parts overlap and all parts of the shape are used, the total area stays the same even as the perimeter likely changes.

Below is some cookie dough and some square cookie cutters. Place 4 cookie cutters on the dough to get a sense of how many cookies you can make with this amount of dough.

We are close to establishing a formula for finding the formula of any parallelogram. Our last step is to explore the heights of real-world situations involving parallelograms. Look at the picture again of the Dockland Office Building in Hamburg, Germany.

Imagine there is a rule in the Hamburg harbor that all buildings must be less than 40 meters tall. The height of this building is . Even though the side of the building is , that length how tall the building is. So, this building meet the pretend rule that buildings must be below 40 meters.

Many apartment buildings in cities around the world have staircases on the exterior of the buildings for residents to use in case of emergencies. Here is a picture of one in Harlem, New York City. Imagine the two balconies on each floor were instead one large balcony.

Super! In both of these example, we see that the height of a parallelogram the same as the length of the side of the parallelogram. Rather, the height of a parallelogram is the length of the line that makes a angle with the base.

We are now ready to think about a general approach for finding the area of any parallelogram. Our approach has been to move around parts of the parallelogram to make it into a and then use the formula to find the area.

Sometimes, it can be easy to visualize rearranging the parallelogram into a rectangle and finding the base and height.

However, when we visualize the other side of the same parallelogram as the base, rearranging into a rectangle becomes a little more difficult. Cutting it in either of the two places shown here won’t easily give us a rectangle.

So, when we take the same parallelogram from the first example, but think of the shorter side as the base, we see the base has a length of cm, the height is cm and the area is still .

So, to find the area of any parallelogram, we have to first identify what side we want to think of as the . Then, we need to identify the line that makes a angle with the base. We call this the of the parallelogram. Finally, to find the area of the parallelogram, we take the lengths of the base and the height and them together. So, a simplified formula for the area of a parallelogram is .

To conclude our work with parallelograms, let’s look at two final examples of parallelograms in architecture.

In 2006, Architects from the firm Tham & Videgard designed a house for an island in the archipelago outside of Stockholm, Sweden. In describing their plans, Tham and Videgard write “The geometry of the plan is generated by the specifics of the site. The house sits on a flat surface between two rocky outcrops” As you can see in the design picture below, the architects had to fit the house in on a flat piece of land between sloping rocky ledges. So, a parallelogram is the best shape to maximize the living space in the house!
