Chapter 8: Decimals > Subtraction of Decimals

Subtraction of Decimals

Can you now subtract 2.58 and 1.32?

Mark 2.58 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

Mark 1.32 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

This can be shown by the table.

OnesTenthsHundredths
258
132

Thus, 2.58 - 1.32 =

Therefore, we can say that, subtraction of decimals can be done by subtracting hundredths from hundredths, tenths from tenths, ones from ones and so on, just as we did in addition.

Sometimes while subtracting decimals, we may need to regroup like we did in addition.

Let us subtract 1.74 from 3.5.

Mark 1.74 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

Mark 3.5 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

OnesTenthsHundredths
350
174

Subtract in the hundredth place. Can’t subtract! Borrow from the tenth place.

Thus, 3.5 – 1.74 =

Subtract 1.85 from 5.46.

Mark 1.85 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

Mark 5.46 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

OnesTenthsHundredths
546
185

Subtract in the hundredth place. Can’t subtract! Borrow from the tenth place.

Thus, 5.46 – 1.85 =

Subtract 5.25 from 8.28.

Mark 5.25 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

Mark 8.28 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

OnesTenthsHundredths
828
525

Subtract in the hundredth place. Can’t subtract! Borrow from the tenth place.

Thus, 8.28 – 5.25 =

Subtract 0.95 from 2.29.

Mark 0.95 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

Mark 2.29 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

OnesTenthsHundredths
229
095

Subtract in the hundredth place. Can’t subtract! Borrow from the tenth place.

Thus, 2.29 – 0.95 =

Subtract 2.25 from 5.68.

Mark 2.25 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

Mark 5.68 in this square by putting dots of ones, tenths and hundredths in the below box.

OnesTenthsHundredths
568
225

Subtract in the hundredth place. Can’t subtract! Borrow from the tenth place.

Thus, 5.68 – 2.25 =

Abhishek had ₹ 7.45. He bought toffees for ₹ 5.30. Find the balance amount left with Abhishek.

Instruction

Total amount of money = ₹
Amount spent on toffees = ₹
Balance amount of money = 7.45 – 5.30 = ₹ .

Urmila’s school is at a distance of 5 km 350 m from her house. She travels 1 km 70 m on foot and the rest by bus. How much distance does she travel by bus?

Instruction

Distance travelled by bus

  • Total distance of school from the house = km m
  • Convert the m into km km
  • Distance travelled on foot = km m
  • Convert the m into km km
  • subtraction of two numbers
  • We get the answer is = m
  • Thus, distance travelled by bus = 4.280 km or 4 km 280 m

Kanchan bought a watermelon weighing 5 kg 200 g. Out of this she gave 2 kg 750 g to her neighbour. What is the weight of the watermelon left with Kanchan?

Instruction

Finding weight of watermelon

  • Total weight of the watermelon = kg g
  • Convert the g into kg = kg
  • Watermelon given to the neighbour = kg g
  • Convert the g into kg = kg
  • subtraction of two numbers
  • Hence,we get the answer is kg
  • Therefore, weight of the remaining watermelon = 2.450 kg
