Exercise 7.6

Solve:

Sarita bought 25 metre of ribbon and Lalita 34 metre of ribbon. What is the total length of the ribbon they bought?

Instruction

Ribbon bought by sarita = 25m
Ribbon bought by lalita = 34m
Total length of the ribbon they bought = ( 25 + 34)m = + m
= + = m =

Naina was given 112 piece of cake and Najma was given 113 piece of cake.Find the total amount of cake was given to both of them.

Instruction

The fraction of cake given to Naina is 112 =
The fraction of cake given to Najma is 113 =
Total amount of cake given to both of them = 32 + 43 = +
= + =
Hence, both of them were given 256 pieces of cake.

A piece of wire 78 metre long broke into two pieces. One piece was 14 metre long. How long is the other piece?

Instruction

Here, total length of wire is given as 78 metre and the length of one piece of wire is given as 14 metre.
To find the length of the other piece we need to length of one piece from the total length.
Length of other piece = 78 - 14
= 7×11×28 = 728 =
Therefore, the length of the other piece of wire is 58m.

Nandini’s house is 910 km from her school. She walked some distance and then took a bus for 12 km to reach the school. How far did she walk?

Instruction

The total distance from Nandini's house to school is given as km
Distance Nandini had covered by bus is km
Total distance covered by Nandini on foot will be the difference of 910 and 12 i.e. - km
LCM of 10 and 2 is
Distance walked = 9×21×1010 =
On simplifying to simplest form by dividing numerator and denominator by 2, we get = .
Hence distance covered by Nandini on foot will be 45 km.

Asha and Samuel have bookshelves of the same size partly filled with books.Asha’s shelf is 56 th full and Samuel’s shelf is 25th full. Whose bookshelf is more full? By what fraction?

Instruction

The portion of Asha’s bookshelf filled is
The portion of Samuel’s bookshelf filled =
Let us compare both the fractions, LCM of 5 and 6 is
Now we have to make both the fractions into equivalent fractions to compare.
We get: 56 = 5×56×5 = while 25 = 2×65×6 =
As we can see denominator is same and comparing numerators, 25 12
So, 56 is than 25.
As we can see Asha’s shelf is more filled than Samuel’s shelf.
Difference between both the filled portions: 2530 - 1230 =
Hence, Asha’s shelf is 1330th more filled than Samuel’s shelf.

Jaidev takes 215 minutes to walk across the school ground. Rahul takes 74 minutes to do the same. Who takes less time and by what fraction?

Instruction

Time taken by Jaidev = 215 minutes = min
Time taken by Rahul = min
Converting these into like fractions.
115 = 115 x 44 =
74 = 74 x 55 =
As 44 35
Hence, Rahul takes lesser time Difference = 115 - 74 = 4420 - 3520 = min
