Chapter 10: Direct and Inverse Proportions > Exercise 10.2

Exercise 10.2

1. Observe the following tables and find which pair of variables (x and y) are in inverse proportion.

(i)

x50403020
y5678

Solution:

x and y are in inverse proportion:

x × y values are not (e.g., 50 × 5 = and 40 × 6 = ).

Therefore, x and y are not in inverse proportion.

(ii)

x100200300400
y60302015

Solution:

x and y are in inverse proportion:

x × y = 100 × 60 =

x × y = 200 × 30 =

x × y = 300 × 20 =

x × y = 400 × 15 =

Since x × y is constant i.e. , x and y are in inverse proportion.

(iii)

x90604530205
y101520253025

Solution:

x and y are in inverse proportion:

x × y values are not (e.g., 90 × 10 = and 60×15 = , but 20 × 30 = ). Therefore, x and y are not in inverse proportion.

2. A school wants to spend ₹6000 to purchase books. Using this data, fill the following table.

Price of each book (in ₹)405075
Number of books that can be purchased15010075

Solution:

Number of books =

Price of each book (in ₹)405075
Number of books that can be purchased15010075
