Chapter 6: Integers > Representation of integers on a number line

Representation of integers on a number line

Instructions

The points to the right of zero are positive integers and are marked + 1, + 2, + 3, etc. or simply 1, 2, 3 etc.

Points to the left of zero are negative integers and are marked – 1, – 2, – 3 etc.

In order to mark – 6 on this line, we move 6 points to the of zero.

In order to mark + 2 on the number line, we move 2 points to the of zero.

Solutions to the Questions on Number Line

Instructions

1. Which is the nearest positive integer to zero?
2. How many negative numbers will you find on the left side of zero?
The number of negative integers depends on the range shown, but generally, there are negative numbers extending to the left.
In the given number line, we see to , so there are negative numbers.
3. Which is greater (-2) or (-1)?
is greater than because on the number line, numbers increase as we move to the right.
4. Which is smaller among 3 and -5? Why?
is smaller because negative numbers are always less than positive numbers.
5. Which integer is neither positive nor negative?
is neither positive nor negative.
