Setting up of an Equation

Let us try to see how the magic works. Lets break it down.

First you are asked to think of a number. We do not know the number. It could be anything 1, 2, 3, . . ., 11, . . . , 100, . . . .

This is an unknown value. Let us denote this unknown number by a letter, say x.

Note: You may use y or t or some other letter in

place of x. It does not matter which letter we use to denote the unknown number you have thought of.

So, we have named your unknown number. We are calling it 'x'.

x

Now, we asked you to multiply your number. We still don't know your number. But we know that it is named x. So if we double it we will have .

x->2x

Next you were told to add 8 to you number. So we will add 8 to .

x->2x->2x+8

Finally we asked you to enter the result. In your mind you calculated the result and lets say it was 18. We don't know your initial number. But we know your final result. But because we named your initial number x, we applied the mathematical operations on x and we now have .

The final result you have got (let's say 18), you got it by applying the same mathematical operations. So

2x+8=18

The solution to the above equation will give the value of x in the "Mind Game" !
