A Line Segment

Take a piece of paper of any size and fold it as you wish.

Upon unfolding it, what do we see? This gives the idea of a line segment. It has two end points and .

Let's look at the another example.

Take a random piece of string or a thread and hold it up to view it. This is another live example of a line segment being formed.

On the canvas to the side we have marked two points and connected them with a line.

Now, try to connect A to B by all possible routes and see if you can connect with a shorter length.

How many ways could you join?

As it turns out, the shortest joining of point A to B (including A and B) is ,in fact, a line segment.

It is denoted by AB or BA.

Here, the points A and B are called the endpoints of the segment.

Similarly, we can use a thin thread. If we hold a section of the thread with our hands and make sure that it is stretched without a slack, this again represents a line segment.(Refer to the above image)

The ends held by hands are the end points of the line segment in this case.
