Ray

Imagine that the line segment from points A to point B (i.e. AB ) is extended beyond A in one direction and beyond B in the other direction without any end.

Now select two random points in the drawing panel.

What can be said about the geometry rendered?

This is a ray.

The following are some models found in real-life for examples of a ray:

Torch Light

Sun Rays

We can also say that a ray is a portion of a line which starts at one end point (called starting point or initial point) and goes endlessly in the other direction.

Usually, there is the starting point and an additional point on the path of the ray which fixes the direction of the ray. Say "A" is the StartingPoint and "P" is a random point that lies on a ray, we can denote the ray by AP.

Take PQ is a ray,

(a) What is its starting point?

(b) Where does the point Q lie on the ray?

(c) Can we say that Q is the starting point of this ray?

Ray AB

Ray AC

On the left, we have a ray AB. It starts at A and passes through the point B. On the right, we have the same ray but now extended and also passes through the point C.

Can you also name it as AC?

Are AB and AC same here?

Can we write OA as AO ?
