Introduction
Let's take a look at some architectural designs from around the world.
When you observe these, what comes to mind? What can be said about how these have been made? Some of the common terms would be lines, locations, and shapes. How is it related to basic concepts like points and lines? These are the things that will be dealt with in this chapter.
Famous monuments that we know about like the Somnath temple (Gujarat, India), the Colosseum (Rome,Italy) etc. have all been there for centuries. It is obvious that the idea of "Geometry" has been a part of our lives for centuries. The term is a derivative of the Greek word ‘Geometron’ where, ‘Geo’ means Earth and ‘metron’ means
Historians believe that such ideas originated in ancient times due to the demands of various fields such as art, architecture, and agriculture. For instance, a farmer, needing to irrigate his crops, had to estimate the expenses required to cultivate crops for the upcoming harvest season.
The architecture of such magnificent palaces, temples, and cities clearly had been influenced by geometry. It is true even today where geometry is found in all forms of art, architecture, engineering etc. We observe different objects like boxes, tables, books, the tiffin box we carry to school for lunch, the ball with which we play and so on. All such objects have different shapes.
All such shapes are made from lines. Let us learn about the lines, angles and polygons.
