Chapter 13: Practical Geometry > Construction of a Circle

Construction of a Circle

Look at the wheel in the image. Notice that every point on its boundary is at the same distance from the center.

This is the fundamental property of a circle—all points along its edge are equidistant from the center.

How to Draw a Circle Using a Compass

To draw a circle of a specific size, we use a compass. Follow these simple steps:

Steps of Construction:

1. Set the Compass:

  • Adjust the compass to the required radius (e.g., 3.7 cm).

2. Mark the Center:

  • Use a sharp pencil to place a point on the paper. Label it as O (this is the center).

3. Position the Compass:

  • Place the metal pointer of the compass firmly at O.

4. Draw the Circle:

  • Without shifting the metal point, slowly rotate the pencil around O until you return to the starting point.

By following these steps, you’ll get a perfect circle!
